"The Distance Between Us is Holy Ground," sang 1,800 registrants at the 2004 Joint Conference of the American Society on Aging and the National Council on the Aging in San Francisco. This chant was led during the conference opening session by Doug von Koss, shown above (below), artistic director of the (men's) ritual performance group The Noah Project. The spiritually rich session of performances led off the three-day program of 1,100 presentations in 50 topic areas. Doug von Koss bade the audience of professionals in aging, "You all serve great causes, and you have dedication to great dreams -- and sometimes against incredible obstacles. Please know that what you do is necessary, important, life affirming and life enhancing. And the work that you do daily ripples out across your communities--and your states. It affects hundreds, perhaps thousands of men and women and children, whom you may never meet."
1800 people in three part harmony is a new record for me. People were weeping with happiness. My thanks to Judith-Kate Friedman for inviting me to perform.
